Fire Burns Eleven Acres Southeast of Elkton

Crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Kellogg Rural Fire Department, and Elkton Rural Fire Department responded to hay field on fire Monday evening, located about five miles southeast of Elkton. Firefighters arrived on scene of the fire, located near the 20,000 block of Highway 138 West, shortly after 6:00 PM. The first engine to arrive on scene of the Highway 138 West Fire reported that it was approximately three acres in size and was spreading quickly due to the evening winds. Firefighters used a pump and roll tactic to stop the forward spread of the fire while the landowner utilized their bulldozer to create a fire trail around the blaze. Crews remained on scene of the fire until 8:00 PM, mopping up hot spots within the burned area.

The Highway 138 West Fire burned a total of 11 acres of cut hay, part of which had already been baled. A hay baler was also damaged by the fire. A preliminary fire investigation indicated that the cause of the fire was related to hay equipment, working in the field.
