Elkhead Road Fire: At approximately 3:15 p.m., crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association and North Douglas County Fire & EMS responded to a smoke investigation located 5 miles east of Rice Hill, near the 8,000 block of Elkhead Road. When firefighters arrived on scene, they estimated that the fire was five acres in size and was burning through a previously logged unit. A bull dozer was used to stop the forward spread of the fire by creating fire trails around the blaze while firefighters installed a hose lay behind it. At 7:00 p.m., the incident commander of the Elkhead Road fire reported that fire trails had been completed around the entire blaze and that crews were working to secure the fire by extinguishing the smoldering and burning material near the fires edge.
GPS coordinates mapped the Elkhead Road fire at just under 17 acres. Firefighters are expected to remain on scene of the fire well into the evening, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines. No homes were threatened by the Elkhead Road Fire and the cause is currently under investigation.
Hayhurst Road Fire: At approximately 5:10 p.m., crews from DFPA and North Douglas County Fire & EMS were notified of an additional smoke report located 3 miles west of Yoncalla, near the 4,000 block of Hayhurst Road. The first crews to arrive on scene estimated the fire to be 40 acres in size and reported that it was also burning in a previously logged unit. A bull dozer was used to construct fire lines around part of the blaze before the hillside became too steep to operate on. Hand crews will continue to work through the night, constructing hand line around the remaining portion of the fire.
Currently, the fire is estimated to be around 50 acres in size, however, the fire perimeter has not been mapped with a GPS. Fire activity is expected to diminish overnight, allowing crews to make good progress on containing the fire. No homes are currently threatened by the Hayhurst Road Fire and the cause is currently under investigation.
In addition to DFPA and North Douglas Count Fire & EMS, crews from Oakland Rural Fire Department and Elkton Rural Fire Department responded to the fire, as well as resources from private timber companies.
