Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to a natural cover fire Wednesday afternoon near the Burnt Mountain Access Road, located approximately 12 miles west of Winston. Crews arrived on scene of the fire around 12:15 PM and reported a slow moving fire burning in heavy vegetation. One helicopter was used to slow the spread of the fire while ground resources worked their way around the blaze. Shortly after 1:00 PM, firefighters reported that the forward spread of the Burnt Mountain Fire had been stopped at a half acre of wildland fuels. Crews will remain on scene of the Burnt Mountain Fire for the remainder of the day, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines. A preliminary fire investigation indicated that the cause of the Burnt Mountain Fire may be vehicle related.
In addition to the DFPA resources that responded to the incident, equipment and personnel from the following agencies also responded to the Burnt Mountain Fire: Tenmile Rural Fire Department, Lookingglass Rural Fire Department, Winston – Dillard Fire Department, and the Coos Forest Protective Association.
